Temple B’nai Israel Committee Membership and Missions – 2021
Note: The President is an ex-officio member of all committees.
Administration
The Executive Committee members. the Board Chair is Chair of Committee
MISSION: Responsible for establishing policies and practices affecting employees of the Temple, including creating and maintaining job descriptions, wage scales, and all human resources activities. Responsible for oversight of the procurement and maintenance of office equipment and supplies.
Building and Grounds
Lori Ramsey, Executive Director
MISSION: Responsible for selection and supervision of contractors and volunteers to maintain the physical facilities of the Temple building and the surrounding grounds. Prepares and maintains a security policy for the Temple. Prepares an annual facilities budget to be submitted to the Treasurer.
Capital Campaign
Communications
(Chair)
MISSION: Generates all communication for the congregation including the website, Shofar, email, public relations and publicity campaigns for events, pictures and/or articles in local newspapers or other media and weekly announcements.
Investigates potential new vehicles for communication.
Finance
Marilyn Title (Chair)
MISSION: Advises the Board and the Treasurer on fiscal and financial governance matters. Oversees the work of the Treasurer. Manages Temple’s investment portfolio. Recommends cash management strategies. Approves preliminary budget prepared by the Treasurer.
Fine Arts Committee
Barbara Portnoy-Spector (Chair)
MISSION: Reviews all donations of Judaica and other gifts in order to bring uniformity and consistency to the appearance of Temple B’nai Israel and determines suitability for use both in décor and ritual. Participates in determining design and decoration of the Temple’s facilities, including the sanctuary, offices, classrooms, social hall, kitchen and outside appearance. Maintains list of gift-giving opportunities. Makes recommendations to the Board for any of the above.
Advancement (Fund Raising) Committee
Barry Koh, 1st. Vice-President
MISSION: Responsible for fund raising for annual operating needs and special campaigns as directed by the Board of Directors.
Hineni
Merry Danaceau and Emily Callahan, (Co-Chairs)
MISSION: Responsible for providing and coordinating volunteer help and support for members in the event of sickness, hospitalization, incapacity or death of family members. Activities include: informing and working in concert with the Rabbi, galvanizing support from other congregational members, providing for meals and transportation needs when appropriate. Prepare and maintain checklist for shiva and mourning.
Membership
Susan Koh (Chair)
MISSION: Responsible for identifying and recruiting potential new members and maintaining a list of friends of the Congregation. Coordinates with the Communications Committee the development of appropriate membership and recruitment literature. Coordinates the programming, scheduling, and organizing of membership and new members’ events.
Nominating

BY-LAW PROVISIONS:
At least one month prior to the annual meeting of the Congregation, the President of the Congregation, by and with the advice and consent of The Board of Directors, shall appoint a Nominating Committee of at least three members of the Board and/or Congregation whose duty it shall be to nominate one candidate for each elective office. Said list shall be presented to the Congregation at the annual meeting
Programming
Anne Rosen (Chair)
MISSION: Oversees planning and organization, in cooperation with the Rabbi and Temple committees, of special social, cultural, membership and celebratory events. Coordinates with Office Manager the scheduling of those events.
Onegs and Kiddush Luncheons Subcommittee
Linda Kappesser, (Chair)
MISSION: Recruits and schedules hosts for Onegs and Kiddushes.
Safety and Security
Lori Ramsey and Elaine Friedman (Co-Chairs)
MISSION: To develop programs for habits of safety for people coming to the Temple. To secure the building and grounds in order to maintain freedom from danger.
Social
Elaine Friedman, (Chair)
Oversees the card playing, movie viewing and book reading groups.
Lifelong Learning Committee
Cheryl Kramer, (Chair)
MISSION: Responsible for planning the annual adult education program for the congregation. The goal of the program is to deepen our understanding of Jewish religion, culture, and history and how we as Jews relate to our community and other religious communities. The program may include themes for year-long study, periodic lectures and/or get-togethers, scheduled Torah study meetings, musical programs, and sponsored lectures.
Religious School
Rabbi Peter E. Hyman, Marianne Styles, Anne Rosen
MISSION: Responsible for the operation of the Religious School, in consultation with the Rabbi, including staffing, curriculum, educational policies, creation of B’nai Mitzvah classes, human resource policies, and scheduling special events for the school.
Ritual Practices
Rabbi Peter E. Hyman, (Chair)
MISSION: Consults and coordinates with the Rabbi on oversight of the ritual practices of the Temple, including the character and conduct of religious services, Bimah honors, and Yahrzeit records.
Funeral Practices Subcommittee

MISSION: Consults and coordinates with the Rabbi on policies and practices regarding funeral practices, including the funeral and shiva period in accordance with Jewish tradition.
High Holy Days Subcommittee
Marcia Shapiro (Chair)
MISSION: Organizes and oversees the assignments and arrangements for the High Holy Days.
